Make Consent as Important as Condoms
The PEEPs give us plenty to talk about in “Friends,” one of seven PSAs they wrote and star in as part of their education efforts for Native American Community Services.
At the start, we see a young man give his friend a condom. If the skit stopped there, we sex educators could pat ourselves on the back and enjoy the pay-off for all that prevention education. Message received. Youth are practicing safer sex. But keep watching and find yourself caught up in a scene rife with peer pressure, ambivalence, and the murky question of consent.
A recent screening of “Friends” left adult viewers wondering, “the sex was protected, but was it consensual?” And the not-so-happy ending suggests that youth may be as confused about this issue as we are, and struggling for ways to talk about it.
It’s time to get out of our comfort zone of condom demos and AIDS 101 and give the topic of consent equal attention.
